Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Abdullahi Abbas, has warned the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to obey the court ruling stopping the conduct of local government elections to avoid throwing the state into chaos.
Naija News reports that Yusuf reaffirmed the state’s commitment to conducting the local government elections scheduled for October 26, 2024, despite a Federal High Court judgment that voided the poll.
The court had invalidated the election process on the grounds that card-carrying members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) were serving as executive officers of the election commission.
Governor Yusuf made this declaration while presenting NNPP flags to the party’s 44 chairmanship and councilorship candidates at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium on Thursday evening.
He emphasized that the state would not tolerate any disruptions to the peace currently enjoyed by its citizens.
But speaking on Thursday while presenting the flags to candidates of the NNPP at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, Governor Yusuf said nobody can stop KANSIEC from conducting the election.
However, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, the APC chairman in Kano urged Governor Yusuf to adhere to the court’s directive, noting that ignoring the court directive was a clear case of invitation to anarchy and lawlessness.
Abbas cautioned Yusuf to desist from taking any action that could lead to a breakdown of law and order in the state.
He said, “The governor should simply respect the laws. As law-abiding citizens interested in the growth of our dear state of Kano, the governor should desist from any act that could throw the state into chaos. Inciting people to take the laws into their hand is not the hallmark of good leadership.”
