The government of Ondo State has ordered immediate evacuation after flood waters caused extensive damage to properties valued in the millions of naira in various parts of the state.

Naija News understands that the flooding followed a prolonged heavy rainfall that persisted for several hours on that day.

Affected areas included Itanla, Oka, Odo Ijomu, Bethlehem, and the Akure-Ondo Expressway, among others.

Reports indicate that numerous homes and vehicles in the impacted neighbourhoods were inundated, displacing many residents.

Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities as a result of the incident.

In response, the state government announced that evacuations were underway in the affected regions, and immediate measures had been initiated to prevent further damage.

This information was conveyed in a statement released on Saturday, October 5, by the state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Oyeniyi Oseni.

The statement emphasized that the government had implemented all necessary measures to prevent future flooding.

Additionally, it was noted that amphibious excavators had been deployed to critical erosion-prone areas within the state for dredging purposes.

The commissioner said, “The cause of the flooding on Friday also could be attributed to development on waterways in an estate at Fagun and along Ife road area of the community.”

He further stated that his ministry would collaborate with the relevant section of the government to address the unlawful development along the waterways.
