Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has expressed his approval of Ademola Lookman’s decision to choose to represent Nigeria over England while still at the peak of his career.
Lookman, who was born in England to Nigerian parents, had previously played for England at the youth level and was part of the squad that won the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
In February 2022, FIFA approved Lookman’s request to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria. Since then, the 26-year-old Atalanta star has become a key player for the Super Eagles.
While speaking on BeIN Sports, Mikel Obi emphasized the importance of players making their decisions about international representation early in their careers.
Obi praised Lookman for not waiting until later in his career to make the switch and commended his performances for Nigeria, stating that Lookman made the right decision and has been a fantastic player for the national team.
The former Chelsea midfielder said: “Players have to wait for a while before they decide they want to represent their African roots. I genuinely think it shouldn’t be that way.
“If you have decided where you want to play. If you decide you want to play for England, France, or Germany, you have to wait; if you don’t get called up, that’s your decision.
“If you are 20 years old, make your decision; don’t wait until you are 26, 28. Don’t wait until you are past your best and we become a second option.
“I think Ademola Lookman made the right decision to switch quickly to represent Nigeria, and he’s done really well. He played well last season and he’s such a fantastic player.”
