Reps Urge NNPC, Dangote Refinery To Allow Independent Marketers Lift Petrol

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has allocated a total of 48.6 million barrels of crude oil to Dangote Petroleum Refinery over the past ten months.

Official data reviewed by Vanguard detailed a monthly breakdown of the supply, beginning with 3.4 million barrels in December 2023 and including 11.7 million barrels already recorded for October 2024.

Despite these substantial deliveries, sources close to Dangote Refinery have expressed concerns that the volume remains insufficient compared to the refinery’s operational capacity.

The Dangote Refinery, which has an installed refining capability of 650,000 barrels per day, is reportedly receiving less than its full operational demand.

The NNPCL has yet to release specific details on the crude oil requirements for Nigeria’s refineries for the last quarter of 2024.

However, during the second quarter of 2024, the government estimated the total daily requirement for all Nigerian refineries, including the Dangote Refinery, at 597,700 barrels.

This figure represented an increase of 114,700 barrels per day from the first half of the year’s daily requirement of 483,000 barrels.

Further analysis suggests that the crude oil allocated to the Dangote Refinery by the NNPCL may be less than 50% of its installed production capacity, raising questions about the optimization of Nigeria’s refining capabilities and the management of national crude resources.
